How to decorate with rugs

This week we were browsing on Pinterest and came across this idea of layered rugs. Rugs can really make or break a fab living room with a sofa and or chair, so we decided to delve a little deeper and see what this rug layering meant. We are now hooked. Read on to find out how to decorate your home with layered rugs and how to incorporate your sofa and/or chair. A rug can add excitement to a room and add texture and layers to a room’s design. Depending on the style, a rug can anchor a room, define a room and add a little warmth. So in what ways can you use a rug? Define different areas A rug can be a great way to define different areas of your home, especially if you have a more open plan type dining and living area. Placing the rug so the feet of your chair and sofa touch the edge, or are placed just on the rug, is a great way to tie in that area of the room. You can layer a smaller rug on top of a larger rug to add even more depth. Compliment Try to use rugs that compliment each other and the rest of the décor in the room. You want your rug to tie together your room, not look alien. Choose colours that are already in your themed to highlight the different elements of your room. Also, make sure that if you use more than one rug, they aren’t the same size. Different sized rugs can cut your space in half visually and disconnect a room. Boost vs soften A rug can either turn up the volume in your room or soften it down. You want to choose a rug that is subtle if your room is already very busy, or a busier pattern for a more subdued décor. If you do want a busy rug, it is a good idea to start with the rug and build your room around the accents and colours in the rug. Alternative use of a rug A rug can be used in other ways than just putting it on the floor. A particularly striking rug can actually be hung on your wall as artwork, similar to a tapestry.
