Does Reupholstering Your Furniture Help the Environment?
In today’s world, we are all trying to be more environmentally friendly and waste less of our natural resources. We are choosing reusable, recyclable products that will help keep more waste out of our landfills and just keep our cities and neighborhoods cleaner for everyone. But, try as we may, we are still missing out on some important opportunities to fight waste.
A key example, our furniture. When it gets old or goes out of style we buy new and, often time, the old furniture ends up in a landfill somewhere where it sits for decades, or longer, before ever breaking down. Did you know that there is something we can do to avoid that scenario and save the environment around us at the same time? It’s called reusing your furniture and, in our case, that means taking what’s old and making it new again by reupholstering it.
Reusing our furniture by reupholstering it not only saves space in landfills, it also saves trees as fewer trees need to be cut down to make new furniture. In addition to that, less steel has to be made, fewer natural resources are consumed, less pollution is created and, at the end of the day, you have more money in your pocket. What could be better than all of that?
But you might be asking yourself if reupholstering truly is the green way to go. After all, the fabric has to be made somewhere out of some sort of natural resource right? That is true, but we are seeing more and more reupholstering materials making the switch to green with recycled fibers being used to make new fabrics and bio hybrid foams being made out of soy products. Much of the backing and additional padding used in re-upholstery materials are made out of recycled polyester Dacron and dyed with all-natural processes.
Re-upholstering your furniture doesn’t just change the way your home looks, it also has a positive effect on the way our planet looks. Reuse your old furniture instead of throwing it out; reupholstering it will save you money and save the planet.
